Is that no the WV to end all WVs?
2. Today is the 2 month aniversary of my beard, as measured from the comment I left on Jordan's blog. I discovered it (the comment, not the beard) when I was delving through his archives a week or so ago.
3. My anatomy lab instructor is exactly like Bill Miller. Everyone think of Bill Miller: whimsical, independantly wealthy, a freelance composer with a thinning hairline. Now, keep him in whatever fraying old-man-clothes he's wearing, and put a white lab-coat over top, and imagine that he is a whimsical, independantly wealthy anatomist. That is what I get to enjoy every Tuesday from 2:30-4:30.
4. Nerds are petty, just like everyone else. I know it comes as a shock (it sure did to me), but it's true. DC++ is a haven for power-hungry people who know more about computers than 99.9% of the other users. This is because they befriend each-other quickly and are given roles of power within the hub. This is the incident that sparked this shocking revelation on my part:
Every morning I turn on my computer before I go to class. The only reason I do this is to log onto DC++ and let my 2 kb/s downloads run all day so that they'll finish before my undergraduate career. Today, after a fine afternoon of slow downloads, I came home to find that I had been banned for 12 days for "repeated abuse of the hub". There are only 3 problems:
1) having scanned back through the chat on the hub for the last number of hours, I could not find any warnings issued to me before the ban, thus it appears to have been totally arbitrary
2) I opened up the rules page, and could find no information whatsoever on banning, being kicked (forcibly disconnected for a short time) from the hub, or "kennylizing" and "lunarizing", both of which are methods which the powerful use to silence people they don't want to read, which leads to number 3:
3) I have no idea what the hell I did wrong! I wrote a very nicely worded email to the guy that wrote the rules page, and I hope he'll get back to me soon.
So, why do I hate nerds now? I don't, at all. But, when I scanned back through the chat I noticed something very very disturbing. A guy came on and immediately started talking shit to the main hub-running-folk. They kicked him, which is what you;re supposed to do, and there's nothing wrong with that. However, he, and several friends, kept coming back on and kept talking shit and telling them to come to his place and fight him. So, the person he was calling out published all his personal information in the chat window:
I don't know about you, but that scares the hell out of me. I don't know how he found that out, but it's likely because he works for Resnet in addition to being a higher-up on DC++. So, now that I've been banned for no reason, I'm slightly hesitant to go up against these people.
Anyway, Hulbert loaned me Civ3 today, so I'm gonna hit that before bed.

You're thinking Java+++, not DC++. Java is a programming language, DC++ is a filesharing program.

Holy shit. He lives on my floor? AND HOW THE HELL CAN THEY ARBITRARILY BAN AN ENTIRE SUBNET?
Hey, I'm officially a geek (I get paid real money to speak to geeks), and I have no idea what the heck those abbreviations stand for.
> HOW THE HELL CAN THEY ARBITRARILY
> BAN AN ENTIRE SUBNET?
'cause that's the sort of power that geeks like to have. It's arbitrary, can be exercised for little or no reason, and rarely carries any penalties for misuse. What's not to like about it for folks who have no life outside their computers? ;-0
Ah for shame. I guess it just hurts to know these guys will have me by the balls for the rest of my life. Of course it only becomes an issue when they know they have me by the balls...
